Monthly Recap | April '15. Happy birthday to me!

recap
This post recaps my month, from personal life to books I’ve read & bought, movies and TV shows I’ve seen and links to posts that interest me.

OUAT1
BirthdaycakeI celebrated my birthday and it was simply amazing! It was on Friday and I had to work, but in the evening I persuaded my boyfriend to go to Cinderella in the cinema. (Loved it! It’s magical)

My family came over on Saturday and it was great; hanging out with everyone, playing board games and having fun. My sister always make my birthday cake and this year she has made my favorite cake so far! I asked for a HP themed cake and it was even better than I could imagine. A HP book with one of my favorite quotes (“always”) and my Hogwarts house <3

I also got really spoiled with money (I'm going to buy a new camera! Hello Canon 700d), tickets for a musical, a tote bag, a bookish mug, a cd from one of my favorite bands [thanks to my wonderful boyfriend] and my parents are giving me the newest Kobo Glo HD. (see more under Whozits)

Presents1Shut up i'm reading mug

The musical was Snow White, because my sister knows me so well, and I went with her, my mother and grandmother. It was HILARIOUS. So much humour and they twisted the story, so it was really unique and unexpected. We also went for a delicious lunch, so I had a fantastic time.

Easter was nice. I got my favorite chocolates (see book haul) and I had two days filled with playing board games. First day with my family, second day with my boyfriend’s family. It was nice to spend so much quality time with everyone. I also had a family weekend with my boyfriend’s family to celebrate his sister’s birthday. We went four days away and we played lots of board games.

My internship is going better ever day. It’s still very busy and it takes up a most of my time, but I learn a lot. I got my midterm review and he was very positive! My grade is 8/10 now, so I’m very pleased. I have worked with: urine, pus, faeces, parasites, MRSA, TBC and respiratory tract. I also got to judge Malaria blood slides on my own! Next up are anaerobes (bacteria who live without oxygen) and it’s really interesting so far. I love this work and the place is perfect for me. Kind people.

MOVIES:
The Guardian: not spectacular.
Maleficent: re-watch and it was just as good as the first time. Angelina is spot-on.
Cinderella: FANTASTIC. Go and see it in the cinema. Music, casting, costumes; perfect.
Frozen Fever: this was a short movie they showcased before Cinderella and it’s adorable.

TV-SHOWS:
I finished my rewatch of Game of Thrones season 4 and I am now starting season 5. FINALLY.
I finished season 6 and 7 from Dexter. I can’t believe all the twists.
I’m terribly behind on Once upon a time and The 100 :( but I’m up to date with New Girl, The musketeers and Big Bang Theory.

This is something new I want to add to my monthly recaps. You can always find tons of links to interesting posts on Christina reads YA and I thought it would be fun to highlight some articles and news that interest me. It is divided in Whozits (random stuff with gadgets and gismos for YT and scientific articles) and Whatzits (bookish).

WHOZITS.
kobo-Glo-HD-eReader-17428169-5Kobo announced it’s newest e-reader! After the Kobo Aura HD H20, it will release their newest Kobo Glo HD. I’ve been in love with my Kobo Glo for over 3 years now, but my oldie can use an upgrade and I can’t wait to get this one in my hands. The H20 was a little too big for me, so this is awesome news!
You lucky guys are able to get it May 1st, Europa has to wait until June 1st. Kobo Glo HD.  Here are some more articles if you are interested in it like me: Kobo Glo HD pictures. Already a review.

And do you keep an eye on the cast for Beauty and the beast? It gets more epic every time. My heart is filled with happiness.

Gadgets and gismos.
-Brazilian researchers have found a break-though in a treatment for Parkinson’s disease. There is a possible progress with stem cell therapy with the use of a substance that’s used for treating cancer.
-A small RNA molecule can suppress cancer-causing genes in mice
-Common bacteria are on the verge of becoming antibiotic-resistance superbugs. I see this happen at work too. We get a LOT of requests to test for antibiotic resistance and there was an outbreak of MRSA (methicillin, or sometimes even multi, resistance Staphylococcus aureus). To tie in with this article cigarette smoke makes MRSA more resistant to our immune system. But good news, there might be a potential game-changer in the fight against these superbugs. A new class of antibiotics that is resistant to resistance. Or perhaps this 1,000-year-old potion that shows promise against MRSA. If you are new to this topic, I suggest to read more about antimicrobial/drugs resistance in this article. And here is more information about MRSA.
-There is a more accurate DNA blood test to detect Down syndrome.
-I love to look at images under the microscope; this is a wonderful gallery with fruit and vegetables.
-I like art, but I must admit that I don’t always get it (those modern paintings with splashes of colour that symbolize something? Not my cup of tea) This is just amazing; Under water art.

WHATZITS.
-The covers from Susan Dennard – Truthwitch and Alexander Bracken – Passenger.
-Publication date for The raven king by Maggie Stiefvater was pushed back to February 2016.
How was your April?

  2. You got such amazing gifts! A happy belated birthday to you!

I was really bummed when I read the news about the release date of The Raven King. I was going to reread The Raven Boys in August and then read the other books all in a row to finish the series in September but I'll have to change those plans now.

  3. THAT CAKE. Wow. You have an amazing sister. I can't tell where the frosting ends and the cake starts, but that is one fantastic cake!

The stuff about antibiotic-resistant drugs and MRSA is so scary to me. I try not to read too much about it, because then I'll start to get paranoid! I did not know that most antibiotics come from soil microbes, but that's really interesting!

  4. THAT CAKE IS SO FABULOUS! I wish my sisters was an exceptional baker! YAY FOR A NEW CAMERA. I wish I can buy a DSLR too, but I spent all my money on my phone + new glasses.

At first, I was pretty indifferent about the live-action Beauty and the Beast, but with Josh Gad and Ewan McGregor, I'm like YES PLZ.

  6. Happy belated birthday Mel! Your cake looks fantastic! Your sister is so talented! And yesss Cinderella was so good. I wasn't expecting to like it so much but it was by far the best film I saw in March (when I went to go see it). Also yay for your new Kobo Glo! I have a Kobo Touch and it's so old but I still love it to death. I have been thinking of upgrading... either to a Kobo Aura (because I love my Kobos) or a Kindle (because of the deals) so I'll be interested in hearing how you like your new Kobo!

    Have a good May! :)

  7. I was sad but then kind of excited about The Raven King, because pfft, I KNOW it'll be awesome and if we have to wait a little longer for extra-awesome...who can I complain, right?!! I DO SO WANT TO SEE THE COVER THOUGH. Your copy of The Scorpio Races is aaaamazing. ^-^ I can't even decide if I like that cover or the hardback one better xD
My April was pretty good! I got a lot of reading done. xD

  8. Oh my gosh that Harry Potter themed cake looks amazing! Your sister is a talented genius and she is definitely not a muggle! I love those mishmash of quotes although my favourite part about it is the snitch! And also, the footsteps. I’m just imagining the Golden Trio walking all over this cutiepie cake, hehe.

I’m really jealous that you guys get to watch musicals all the time! I have to wait for months before they even come to the Philippines! :/ That being said, Snow White sounds amazing. Was it a dark twist or no? Fairytales with dark twists are my favourite.

Congratulations on your grade! It looks like your hard work really paid off! Also, I’m glad that you loved Conspiracy of Blood and Smoke. I just got it yesterday and I’m really excited to read it.

I also loved Cinderella but I’m kind of iffy on all the CGI that they used. Nonetheless, the cast was perfect in every way and Helena Bonham Carter was superb as Fairy Godmother.

BRACE YOURSELF FOR GOT SEASON 5. REMEMBER TO NEVER EVER FALL IN LOVE WITH A CHARACTER!

  9. HAPPY BELATED BIRTHDAY. Gosh, isn't that cake just BEAUTIFUL!? I'd almost not want to eat it (almost--but nothing much can stand between me and cake.) I absolutely ADORED Cinderella. I've always been a fan of the story but this version was beautiful and magical and gah, I just loved it. <3

  10. I didn't really like Guardians of the Galaxy either .. it was just kinda "meh" but I feel like it got tons of hype.
Ive been meaning to reread Princess Academy too, since I saw she's releasing some new / a new novel in that series. I think it's called Stolen Magic, I have it from Edelweiss. ooh and I really wanna read Darkest Part of the Forest. I just love Holly Black so much. I started listening to the audiobook but I had to return it to the library.. *sad face*
Glad you had a good April! I did too, it went by so so fast though :) I got out of my reading funk and now am obsessively reading graphic novels lol. Also reading Monstrous but the choppy narrative is kinda giving me a headache. lol.

I adore Maleficent too, Angelina Jolie is really brilliant in it ♥ Just reading that you watched it again makes me want to watch it again too! I still haven't seen Cinderella though but I want to. I'm also really happy that your internship is going better and better too, you deserve that^^ Seeing that you read The Casual Vacancy reminded me that I need to get into that one myself - I'm happy you enjoyed it and look forward to your review. 20. Whee, sounds like you had a fabulous birthday and THAT cake is so pretty! :heart eyes:

I love Canon and though I really don't have much idea about their DSLR range, I'm pretty sure it'll rock.

I've had my eye on getting a Kobo Aura but now I guess I should look at Kobo Glo HD before making a final choice. (I'm weirdly indecisive when it comes to getting an e-reader hehe). I do use my Kobo app a lot so I think getting a Kobo ereader would be my best option.

I plan to reread Cinder and finally read Scarlet, Cress and Fairest closer to the release date of Winter. I'm so so excited.

Ugh, so sad about The Raven King being pushed back to 2016. =/

I love the covers of Truthwitch and Passenger, though.

Here's to having an awesome May! =D

  21. Happy birthday! That cake is INCREDIBLE! That's the kind of cake you Pin on Pinterest, thinking you'll never actually *see* one in real life! Kudos to your sister. Kudos.

I am mad keen on seeing Cinderella - I'm hoping to go on Wednesday. I love fairytales, I love pretty dresses ... it looks perfect!

I'm interested to see your rating of The Casual Vacancy. I have it - not yet read - but I've heard from a lot of people that they didn't enjoy it that much. Obviously HP is life and truth be told, I'm a little nervous to read it in case I don't love it ... I'm going to read The Cuckoo's Calling soon.

Code Name Verity and Gone are both smashing books. If you've not read them yet, you're in for a treat.

    Happy May!

I love that gallery of fruit and vegetables under the microscope: they're just so cool! I'm also really glad you liked Cinderella. I'm babysitting this weekend so I was thinking of taking my sister to see it. Have a wonderful month!
