Personal | Finding a balance.

You might have noticed something. Normally, I post something every other day, but lately I’ve been slacking and that’s all because of my internship. Before I got started I had a lot of free time. School was laid back with hardly any homework (or it was so easy it was done within a couple of hours) and I had short school days. I also had a long summer vacation + an extra free month. Now I’m working full time from 9 to 5 (and two weeks ago ‘til 6) and I need some time to adjust to this change.

To be honest, I have no idea why I post this.. It’s my blog after all and I don’t have to excuse myself for cutting back on my posts, but at the same time I want to let you know what’s going on. You guys are friends after all and I want to keep you up-to-date about changes on the blog. That being said, I’m still here and I will figure this out! I might have to do something I haven’t done before and that’s: making a schedule or point out one day as ‘blogging day.’

This also means that I won’t be commenting as often as I used to. I will still try to visit your blog as often as I can, but I won’t be able to sit behind my computer every day for hours. I’m sad that I have to cut down on this, but I have to be realistic and I know this isn’t achievable. I’m happy I worked my butt off a while ago, because now I have a lot of concept posts waiting to be published. At least I have enough to keep posting without stressing out.

So, bear with me while I’m trying to find a new balance between life, work + school and blogging! And if you don’t:

giphy
;) Just kidding.

If you have any tips about how you schedule (or if you have any useful links) I would love to hear about it in the comments! Thanks guys.

  1. Ugh, if you figure out how to balance it all, let me know!

I think you're off to a great start by admitting you can't do everything at the same time commitment you used to! OF COURSE we support you and love you and will be happy to see you when you can! Also we're stoked about your internship so yes any haters can go to the left. :)

  2. I have the same issue, and I freak out when I know I haven't posted or scheduled the right post for the right day. Then I realise that it's ok because I still have other responsibilities to deal with. Work is a really big deal, and a pretty big step to wherever it is you want to be so don't worry too much about all this right now. I think I find that if I can dedicate maybe a couple of hours on a day off to writing for the week I'll have my posts ready. It also means I'm stress free.

    Good luck with everything!!

  3. It's rough. But I've learned to stop apologizing for not being around. We all have lives to live outside of blogging. And if you have a loyal enough readership, they'll stick with you until you're ready to post something of significance (or not!).

    Hang in there!

  4. Aw, Mel, I know how it feels like. After all, I've ranted all about school and exams and having so little time that I needed to go on several hiatuses. O_O Thanks for updating us, and don't worry about not being around as much as usual -- many, if not all of us, have busy lives, so we totally understand. I'll miss your presence a lot, of course, but sometimes life is more important than anything else. :)

As for tips... lol, I'm sorry I can't really help in that area since I basically ran away from blogging entirely and took hiatuses until I was done with my exams. But what I did before things got too busy was I would study all week (with maybe one to two hours a day of leisure time on the computer), and then devote both my weekends entirely to doing what I want to do. It worked pretty well!

Stay strong, Mel! Don't let work get you down! <3

  5. Awwww Mel, that is totally understandable! We will DEFINITELY stick with you as you try and find a system that works with your new schedule ♥♥ I remember when I was working crazy hours last Winter it put a cramp in my usual routine, but you'll find a balance that works for you :) xx

  7. The way I manage school and blogging etc is by planning when I'll do school work and decide when I want to spend some time blogging. It's usually during the weekends because I don't have to be anywhere on those days (if I'm blogging, it's usually on a saturday evening). However, it's been quiet all month on my blog but I'd like to blame writers-block for that.

If you can't find a good balance right way, don't worry about it. Once you settle down a bit it'll come naturally.

    Good luck with the internship!

  8. Balance a blog and life is hard work, but I think you can do it. I don't know how much you plan in advance, but I have found when I get everything ready weeks in advance my blog flows better. That way when life gets in the way, the pressure of having to type something up quickly is not there.

Good luck with your internship, and finding a balance between life and blogging!

  9. Congrats on the internship!! School takes so much time out of my blogging :( Oh my gosh, school and work must be even more difficult! I commend you for managing to post as often as you do even now! That's more than I do XD I'm sorry, I wish I had some sage advice to give! I think you're doing a pretty great job though :)

  10. Well you seemed pretty good at posting on your blog! ;) I kind of seem like a failure now because I'm just so busy with school that I haven't been posting for about a week or more at times. You must have double the work than I do! Sorry, but I don't really have any advice to give you, but it doesn't seem like you need any because you've been doing a great job managing school, work, and blogging! But good luck anyway and congrats on the internship ;)

    1. There is no failing when it comes to blogging - since it's a hobby! I'm lucky I made a lot of posts when I had the time, so I have enough to post for now.

  11. The internship sounds gruelling, but I bet it's an amazing experience. Real life vs. blogging is always the never-ending battle. You'll find a balance. And everyone will understand. I'm only making everything work right now because I'm cutting back...on sleep :/

  12. Ah, the joy of managing school and blogging.
I know exactly how you feel like. It's exhausting, right?Sometimes I am so caught up with school and exams that my blog stays abandoned for weeks because of my lack of time and inspiration. I hate that.
Good Luck Mel, I hope you'll find the magic of balancing soon.If you do, don't forget to let me know.

  14. Always real life before blogging life! We don't blame you for nothing, girl. :) I have a pretty tough school life because I have to be up at 6 and I don't get home until 5pm, and then I have to the crap load of homework that I get as well as play piano and occasionally go out for a run. IT'S CRAZY, so I feel you. Right now, the only way I'm managing is to make lots and lots of posts on the holidays and on the weekends.

  15. My tip would just to be to create to do lists with blog posts on your daily to do! I don't know. That's what I do. I don't have an internship either, plus my homework load isn't massive. My only issue is that I'm attending to relationships (friends, family, "that guy," etc.) and that gets in the way of blogging as well as my Supernatural. I hope you find a good balance! I have yet to find that balance and even reading takes great effort of my part as well as scheduling. The most I've been reading lately is Great Expectations, the book that I have to read for school. Great post! :D

  16. I don't have any helpful tips but since I went trough basically the same problem when I got a baby, I can comfort you - do not worry it gets better. You will just have to make little tweaks in your blogging routine. To me it helped because I started typing drafts for posts on my phone whenever I had a little bit of free time.
Congrats on your job. And don't worry - we'll be here waiting for you. ;)

  17. Urgh, balance is so hard. I've been struggling this year too since my work schedule is erratic. Everyone that reads and loves your blog will completely understand that you can't come home after your internship and work on your blog, you need the time to relax!
I try to keep a notebook with me when I'm reading so I can jot down my notes about books and it doesn't take too long to write the reviews. And if I'm out, I write notes on my phone. I also try to schedule any memes I'm doing in advance - I have WoW posts scheduled until the end of the year.
Don't stress yourself out! Good luck with the internship! :)

  18. No worries! It's hard when things change and you can't blog the exact same way you have been. I always went through transitions when school started back up, but I find work is even harder to handle than school, for some reason. You are AMAZING with commenting generally, so less won't be bad! (Certainly not as bad as I am...) :)

I hope your internship is going well!!

  19. Don't you worry! I completely understand and get it. I work a lot and then have my only guaranteed day off (Sunday) as the day I go see my parents and cousins every week. So I can't blog on that day. It's hard to find the time to do everything, from writing posts, to visiting blogs to replying to comments. I'm sure everyone will understand if you can't post as often.

I'd love to say I have tips for scheduling but I need all the help I can get on that front! I have been keeping a list of ideas for discussion posts and things, but still not written any. I am going to be looking at everyone else's advice ;)

  20. If you can take maybe a week off from posting and start writing things to go up for the next week, I find that helpful. If you give yourself a week lead time of posts it's less stressful and easier to keep up with.

  21. It is hard to balance everything at once. I have had many life changes this year and so I have hardly read as much as I have in past years. I just figure blogging should be fun and I don't have time to post every day or comment every day so I just do what I can. I love blogging but I don't make it my life.
Good luck on finding the balance, I know we all struggle with it.
As for blog scheduling I use a calendar to keep track but that is also because multiple people post on my blog and without the schedule we would all be posting on the same day.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I'm still trying to figure out how to strike that happy balance but you know what? Maybe there isn't a balance. Maybe we can't give equal attention to everything at the same time. Maybe we just have to do what we feel we can do at a given time. I think that's okay. And since, this is your space, you totally have control over how you manage it. But yeah, designating a particular day for blogging is a good start. You can also allocate an hour or two per day just for blogging or commenting. - Joy @ The Bookshelf Intruder

  23. Oh man, I'm sorry to hear your new schedule is keeping you so busy! I hope you're still getting a lot out of your internship though. I definitely can't give any advice on finding a balance and adapting to a new schedule since I clearly don't know what I'm doing either, but the important thing is not to stress!

  24. Enjoy your internship! I totally get where you are coming from, and I hope you don't ever get stressed from the balancing act! I am terrible at scheduling, but think I am going to crash and burn because of it next month during NaNo.

  25. Hugs. <3 I don't blame you for not posting all that often. Life is just all kinds of busy sometimes :) Take your time; no rush. <3 still, I do love reading all your posts :D

  26. Mel, don't worry! I think we all understand the difficulty of finding that perfect balance between offline and online life.

I wish I could tell you some amazing kind of plan or schedule that I use/d, but I don't really have one. Your "blogging day" idea is pretty much what I did when Honours was all up in my time all the time.

I'd just put aside a day, and write reviews and discussions and schedule them, and also spend time replying to comments and commenting back.

Somehow it all just works out, and I know that will be the case for you, too! :D Good luck with your internship!

  27. I know what you are dealing with Mel! I work full time (not to mention that I drive an hour to and from work) and I go to school part time which is at least two nights a week. It's a LOT. I've sort of noticed that I can never do ALL THREE (work, school, and life) really well at the same time. Something always has to give until one of the other two eases up (and its usually my social life hah). I also have to be REALLY efficient and I am a huge multi-tasker. I also don't really know what "free" time feels like. But that's just me (and i'm a little neurotic).

My crazy schedule is why you'll typically see my comment in spurts, days or even weeks apart. Whenever I get some free time (even if it's at work like now) I try to catch up on commenting but I don't have time to comment on nearly as many blogs as I'd like to so I always prioritize my favorites. Sunday has also become my unofficial homework/blogging day and is when I get a lot of my reviews done. And I'll read every free second I get throughout the week but this is also where audiobooks help me a lot (since i can listen to them when I drive and exercise).

You'll adjust and you'll define a new norm but you can definitely do it. (If I can do it, you can do it!) And your readers will stick with you for sure. We are an understanding bunch I think. Good luck!

  28. I find that a lot of folks I know that blog usually are students or ones that didn't already have full time blogs and thats how they are able to keep up. I've always had a full time job when I started out blogging so I jumped in knowing I had to tackle a crazy balancing act. At first I spent ALL my free time blogging. Like all night after work I'd sit on the couch or in front of the computer blogging, visiting, commenting and reading and my husband started to get aggravated with it. And I realized it was just eating up way too much of my life.

So now I try to write/schedule my posts during my lunch hour. I visit some blogs during a few of the breaks I get during the day. I try to make sure I'm always a few days a head on scheduled posts by the time the weekend comes around because I can't spend all weekend on the computer anymore like I used to with my toddler. So I used to post everyday and now I let a day go by usually once a week where I don't post. I don't plan which day it is but usually it end up being one of the weekend days or Monday. And I just don't stress it anymore. I also recruited a few friends to help read and review the books. That way I have some other days during the week where I'm just formatting their posts and scheduling them instead of writing AND formatting and commenting back. It seriously helps. I know I'm not as present around the blogosphere as I used to be but still working full time, having the 2yo old and hubs and now another baby on the way makes it difficult. Hopefully I'll have tons of time during maternity leave and possibly I'll decide to take a few years off work - who knows.

I hope you find your balance. Its a lot easier to do once you realize like you are that you just have to let things go and that you have to plan for your blogging time on a schedule. It works for me and then I squeeze in extra visiting and commenting when I can. I still scroll through my reader and see folks posts that I follow but can't take the extra time anymore to comment every day because those added comments all add up to extra minutes. So it seems like I'm not visiting anymore when I really am - which people don't realize but *sigh* you can't do everything right!?
