'Mel on reading' is a little feature I created as part of my Fairytale news. It's my way to show my thoughts on topics that go from pet peeves in reading to my favorite things in books.
I think we all have a certain type of character we fall for. Some people swoon over the bad guys, some look for the good guys, but there is so much more in between. Today I want to show you the different things I like in book boyfriends. For me, most of them are the quirky, humorous or silent/broody types. I like it when they have imperfections, because it makes them more interesting and realistic. I say no to the perfect, flawless hunks or the macho's.
There, I said it. It sounds attractive when a male character snorts. Call me crazy, but there is something quirky about it and I don't know..
“Goodfellow?” Glitch stared at Puck nervously. “Robin Goodfellow?”
“Oh, look at that, he’s heard of me. My fame grows.” Puck snorted and leaped off the roof.
It doesn't matter which topic, but I like it when they aren't afraid to speak their mind. It gives plenty of interesting situations.
“Can I be honest with you?" Chaol leaned closer, and Celaena leaned to meet him as he whispered: "You sound like a raving lunatic.”
It's not always about appearance. A character doesn't have to be 'the most beautiful face I've ever seen.' Sometimes it's about what's going on with someone's personality.
"I stare down at his face. It has not grown more beautiful since I first found him, festering in the dungeon, and yet it is more dear to me than my own.” (About Beast)
Flirty and humour (especially sarcasm).
I am by no means a flirt. I think I would suck at it, being shy and too self-conscious, but there is something exciting about male characters that make flirty replies - or one that has a good sense of humour.
“I can’t decide if you’re crazy or stupid.”
“I have so many good qualities,” Sturmhond said. “It can be hard to choose.”
Trust and loyalty.
The moment you see that he would do anything to keep her save and that she is able to trust him with her deepest secrets.
“I knew they would kill me when they found out, but…” He struggled for words, releasing a sharp breath. “I think I realized that I would rather die because I betrayed them, than live because I betrayed you.” (Scarlet, Wolf talks.)
When it's obvious that the male character loves the MC no matter what. When he accepts her and all her flaws.
“There is no shame in scars, Ismae.” (Duval)
So, some of my favourite male characters:
-Sturmhond from Siege & Storm.
-Captain Thorne from Scarlet (although I went with a quote from Wolf)
-Hector from The crown of Embers.
-Valek from Poison study.
-Fred from Poison.
What do you look for? Definitely name some of your favourite male characters!
