Q: Have you ever bought a book BECAUSE of a bad review?
Actually, I like to do that sometimes, just to see if I have the same opinion. I have had a couple of times where I end up loving the book, so I keep doing it. A bad review makes me wonder about the book. There are a couple of ‘rules’ I have set up for myself, because I want to buy books I know I’m going to love.

If there are a lot of bad reviews, and I do some research for it, I probably won’t give it a try. It also depends on the reasons someone disliked the book. For example: If the characters are ignorant and dull with zero personality, I’m not going to buy it. That’s one thing I hate so much about a book. But if it’s based on the writing style, I don’t mind to try it :) That’s just something personal.

Sometimes when a book is popular and it get’s bad reviews, I want to see why certain people love it. Like ‘Twilight.’ I absolutely hate those books and I’m still stuck in the third. I want to read them, so I can really tell my opinion about it. The only thing I’m very glad about is that I bought them in a cheap bookstore :p

Tell me, what’s your answer this week?

    1. I always try to understand it.. There are so many great books out there which don't get so many attention as Twilight. What's so special about those book? Vampires with sparkles? A whiny, shallow, boring, dull main character with no personality who still get's a lot of attention from boys? I don't get it.

      Follow you back!

  2. Hah, fellow Twilight haters. I bought the cheap versions too, and pretty much hated Breaking Dawn so much that it ended up a DNF. New follower.
I love your blog, it's so pretty!

  3. I started reading "seriously" last year and that's why there's a huge bunch of books I still haven't read. So I always try to buy the ones that got better reviews, obviously. If there are mixed reviews about a book, I usually think it's worth giving a try. But not if it's just bad reviews!

I read and liked Twilight when it first came out. It kind of was the first YA book I read and loved and got me to reading, so... Maybe if I had read it now that I have a bit more knowledge I'd have thought different. Not that I'll ever know, though! xD

Your blog is very nice! New follower :)

    1. That's a good reason indeed :) Most of the time I buy books based on the synopsis (and allright, the cover :p). I tend to look at reviews if I have my doubts about the book, but most of the time, they are so subjective.

There are a lot of people out there who like Twilight. I know how you must feel about it. Harry Potter was my first fantasy book that got me hooked to the whole genre and it will always be special to me :) There are a lot of books I love, but other people can hate them. It's just personal taste :)

      And I follow you back!

  5. New GFC follower :) Thanks for stopping by our blog! Twilight did get a lot of bad reviews, but there are a lot of great reviews for it. I just took it with a grain of salt. Same thing with other awful reviews - if it's getting a lot of positive and negative reviews, then I'll read it just to see for myself.

    Happy Friday!

  8. Hi, I'm your newest follower! I totally agree with your answer. I don't particularly judge a book by its writing style because every author has his/her own style of writing. for me, it's the characters and storyline matter the most.

  11. Yes exactly! There are many times where I just want to be able to give my opinion on a book that others can't agree on.

  12. No I haven't usually but I read bad/good reviews for the same book and as long as I feel I like the book I read it no matter what people say about it because every one has different way of thinking and taste in books :)

  13. If there's a book I want to read but it's gotten a lot of negative reviews I usually get it from the library first because I don't want to spend all that money if I don't end up liking it, haha.

    1. That's also a clever way! It's a shame my library doesn't provide the books I like to read. I live in The Netherlands, so there are not so many English books to borrow :)

  16. Old follower hopping through. Hahah, Twilight. Oh yeah. I think if I hadn't already read the books when they came out, I'd probably have done so just because of all the negative and positive reviews. I want to judge books for myself. :)

I love reading reviews before reading a book as I like to know what may happen later.Life is too short to read terrible books.

    1. You're right. There are so many great books out there. It's a shame to waste your time on bad ones. But sometimes, it's just fun to read something with so many bad reviews, just so you can talk about it.

  21. Hi, new follower! Thanks for stopping by my post. I liked Twilight, but didn't feel like the books were "good." I probably would have been dissuaded from reading by a negative review, so I'm glad I didn't read any.
